Ricky Gervais Podcast, Series 2

March 18th, 2006

I totally loved the first series of the Ricky Gervais podcast, but when I learned that the Series 2 would only be available for a fee I held back. I don’t have any serious objections to paying for a podcast—I pay for cable tv after all—and you can’t halt progress, blah-de-blah, if anything becomes really popular someone usually finds a way to take your money for it. But what I’d like to know, from anyone who’s listening to Series 2, is whether there are some good reasons why it’s worth coughing up the dough. Now when I’m saying I loved the first series, I’m not kidding—it was laugh out loud central, and I’ve probably listened to all twelve episodes about 3 or 4 times. However, it seemed to me that some of the momentum was wearing off towards the final episodes of Season 1. I got to thinking that maybe, just maybe, the little bald head of Karl Pilkington joke was starting to show signs of wear. I hope I’m wrong, but if you can enlighten me I’d be grateful. Feel free to leave a comment, even if you haven’t heard the new episodes, if you have thoughts on whether it’s worth it. (By the way, I think the cost is something like US$7 per month/4 episodes.)

I think that the second series has been 50/50… there’s been the odd good episode but some have been terrible…. i dont know what it is, i think they should have taken a break after series one and not gone straight into it… the fact there’s no more monkey news doesnt help!

Interesting. I read a comment somewhere—maybe on iTunes?—that Ricky Gervais sounded tired in the first few episodes of Series 2. Perhaps they did need a break. In hindsight it does seem like they rushed through to the second series, although when it was announced I thought they had just been playing it cool to see what kind of numbers they could drum up by episode 12. Suppose I assumed they had always planned to keep going if it was rating well. Monkey News… Series 1 will be podcast folklore one day.

[...] If you’ve been following recently here are a few things you’d already know: In January I pulled out of school. In February Elena and I were amazed by Brokeback Mountain. In March cyclones Larry and Glenda caught Australia in a pincer attack, while the Ricky Gervais Podcast hit a bit of a slump. And in April Shoham and Michel got married, I switched web hosts and Jon Hicks released some new designs that rocked my world. What will the future hold? Well, I will be on the job market soon (knock on wood) so there might be a story or two gestating there. I’ve also got a couple of film and TV-related posts in the works that I plan to finish up and roll out the door in the next week or so, and the new Placebo is just so fantastic that its story must be told.
